The horse was not designed to carry a human. Carrying a weight on the unsupported middle of the spinal column can cause the already close together Dorsal Spinal Processes to touch.
This can cause discomfort or pain, which often takes time for the rider to identify. If you have arrived here, I am sure you have extensively researched the problem.
There is a solution, and a way to reverse the condition. The musculature that controls spinal alignment is deep within the horse, underneath the spine. By retraining your horse’s posture to lift the spinal column, the processes will naturally separate and the problem will resolve itself, at source.
Over decades I have experimented with many ways to solve KS. The one method that has consistent success involves three steps.
Firstly we must release defensive tension in the topline. The back muscles (longissimus dorsii) losck the painful area by contracting, therefore preventing the bones from rubbing together. This tension has to be released or it is not possible to lift the spine into realignment.
Secondly, we must restore range of motion. After a long period of back tension, our horses lose the muscle memory and flexibility that the spinal column needs to function correctly.
Lastly, is to tone the core. After releasing any defensive tension, and restoring range of motion throughout the spinal column, the last phase is to strengthen all the muscles in the core so that the system can take the weight of the rider without the spine losing alignment.
Retraining this condition has become my main focus, after rehabilitating hundreds of horses and returning them to a happy, pain free life with their rider.
If you need assistance, I offer a 1Hr Online consultation where we examine your horse’s individual condition in depth and develop a strategy, timeline and discuss the specific exercises to achieve on your horse’s path to a recovery.
